An Overview of Language through Motor Planning Words for Life

In this course, participants will learn about the LAMP approach, the LAMP Words for Life AAC device, and The Center for AAC and Autism. Information regarding language features within the LAMP Words for Life application will also be discussed (i.e., single words vs pre-programmed phrases, core vs fringe vocabulary, multi-meaning icons). Participants will develop an understanding of how to obtain and understand the LAMP Words for Life application, as well as therapy implementation information and suggestions.   

Content Disclosure: This course focuses exclusively on the LAMP Words For Life Program. Other similar programs will not be discussed.

Bio:

Kelsey Dowler is 29 years old and originally from West Virginia. She obtained her Masters degree in Speech Language Pathology from Marshall University in August 2017 where she really fell in love with AAC.

Following graduation, Kelsey worked at a private pediatric outpatient center for two years in the Washington D.C. area where she treated clients mostly with ASD, AAC, and CAS. Here is where she started the process to obtain her LAMP Certified Professional certification through The Center for AAC and Autism. 

In August 2019, Kelsey's boyfriend, pup, and she moved across the country to San Jose, California. For the past two years, Kelsey has been working as an SLP/AAC Specialist at a moderate-severe non-public ASD school in the Bay area. Her caseload primarily consists of students ages 4-22 using various low, mid, and high AAC devices. In 2020, Kelsey completed the requirements and obtained her ATP (Assistive Technology Professional) certification through RESNA.

Learner Outcomes:

  • Participants will be able to list and describe the five Language Connections within the LAMP approach.

  • Participants will be able to describe the origin of the LAMP approach and how to access the LAMP Words for Life application.

  • Participants will be able to summarize key features of the LAMP approach such as: use of single words vs pre-programmed phrases, core vs fringe vocabulary, and multi-meaning icons. 

  • Participants will be able to apply learned concepts regarding the LAMP Words for Life application when setting up and implementing the program within therapy sessions.

  • Participants will be able to list additional resources for accessing and creating materials in correlation with the LAMP Words for Life application.
